Happy book birthday to the amazing Tricia Levenseller! The Shadows Between Us is now officially out and I’m very impatiently waiting for my copy to come in as we speak.
I was so lucky and won an ARC (advanced review/readers copy) of this book in a GoodReads giveaway. Let me tell you, as my highest anticipated read of the year, I was trying every which way to get my hands on an early copy of this book. I literally screeched when I got the email saying I won it!
My husband is obviously on my Amazon, so he asked me earlier today, “we’re getting something in the mail today?” I looked down at The Shadows Between Us which I was reading at the time and told him, “yeah. This.”
“So you’ll have two copies of it?” “Yes. And I have no shame.” Then I proceeded to go back to reading.
That all being said, let’s get into this review for my highest anticipated book of the year and the book that made me forget about all other releases coming out this year!
As I said before, I don’t remember any other release that were/are coming out this year because I had a one track mind when it came to this book. So that being said, please comment with any releases you’re highly anticipating for the remainder of the year so I can get excited about those now.
Remember, this review will be spoiler-free and I am reviewing an uncorrected proof. Because I’m not going to go into detail about anything, there shouldn’t be much of an issue. But all thoughts are my own and are my true feelings about this book.
To start, let’s take a look at at the cover of this book.
In case you’re not sick of hearing it yet, let me tell you again, this is an uncorrected proof of the book. It’s not for sale. To help differentiate between ARCs and final copies, most (if not all) ARCs have slightly different covers from the final copy. The change is minor and usually unnoticeable until pointed out. I didn’t even know it was done until recently!
This cover is just to die for (pun intended?). Everything about it pertains to the book in a very non-spoilery way which is a relief since some covers do spoil things a bit. You usually don’t know what until you’re reading the book, but still.
This cover is eye catching and has that dark feel that translates to the story well, in my opinion. You see this cover and you’re immediately interested in what this book may be about.
Along with that, the title is perfection for the story. I’m glad that if there were other options, they chose The Shadows Between Us. It just fits perfectly with the story.
Now, onto what this book is about.
This book follows Alessandra, the second daughter and the one always overlooked, when it’s finally her time to get married after her sister becomes engaged. Her plan, woo the Shadows King, marry him, kill him, and take over the kingdom. Simple enough right?
Except the Shadow King has secrets. It’s forbidden to touch him, punishable by death, and there are other people looking to kill him as well.
Alessandra needs to keep the king alive long enough for her to make him fall in love with her and marry her so she can kill him herself.
Alessandra is cunning and goes after what she wants, kicking butt and taking names. The Shadow King is dark and mysterious, just as his name implies.
My thoughts? Let’s talk about those because I have many!
It has been so freaking long since I’ve been so immersed in a story that my heart was rushing and I was short of breath while reading it. I can’t even put into words how this book made me physically feel. I loved every bit of it.
Both of these characters are so morally grey and I’m LIVING for it. It’s always a nice breath of fresh air to get a main character who doesn’t fit into the norm. She was so sly that it made me root for her, even when she was doing some not so good things.
This story kept you on the edge of your seat, despite the fact you have a general idea of the “plot twist” at the end. Things kept seeming to wrap up and I knew something bad was going to happen because there was still a lot left in the book!
I didn’t want to put this book down because I was so invested in what was going to happen to these characters. I was reading a good portion of the second half on my breaks at work and I couldn’t put it down when I had to go back!
Like I did say, the plot twist was fairly predictable, but I feel like I was so invested in the rest of the story that some of the details just slipped my mind and I’m easily able to overlook the predictability of it.
Overall, I just loved this story and I continue to Stan the crap out of Tricia Levenseller. Please check out this book and her other releases.
I recommend this if you like…
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. I feel there are a lot of similarities in the characters, but so many differences that it doesn’t feel like you’re reading a copy of those characters.
Morally grey main characters. Alessandra definitely felt like that to me. Not necessarily to the extent of, say, The Darkling, but I’d still classify her as morally grey.
Pretty dresses and dress making. While those things aren’t a main focus of the story, they are a focus and it’s delightful as someone who loves fashion but not enough to wear it or create it herself.
Ploys, plots, and trickery. This book has all of that! I loved it.
Overall, I’d give this 4.5-5 stars. I’m sticking with 5 stars because I just can’t hold myself back. I loved this book too much!
Let me know in the comments if you got this book or plan on reading it! Let me know if my review helped push you to deciding to read it. I’d love to know.
