Romance Movies I Want to Watch Wrap Up

Good morning everyone and happy Monday. Make sure you all are staying safe as you’re returning to work.

Also, don’t forget to click here to view any resources to sign petitions, donate, or educate yourself on the BLM movement. Click here for a list of movies that will help educate you. Don’t just limit yourself to watching movies that show racism and inequality. Watch other things as well, like romances featuring Black characters.

Today I’m going to be wrapping up the movies that I chose for my round 1 of movies I want to watch, all of which were romances or had romantic elements. I know that I could have done better with choosing movies, so let me know some of your favorite movies (romance or not) in the comments below.

And let’s get into this.

Alex Strangelove

This movie is about a senior in high school discovering his sexuality when he didn’t seem to be interested in having sex with his girlfriend and started to have feeling for a man that he meets at a party.

This wasn’t really my favorite. It just rubbed me the wrong way and I couldn’t find myself getting interested in it. I think the overall story was good, but in general it just wasn’t for me.

This was the first of these movies that I ended up watching and I kinda hated it a lot. It’s about a girl whose father is trying to get the rodeo kicked out of town for ethical reasons and a cowboy in the rodeo. So, I didn’t really look at what it was about before going into it, but they handled all of this so poorly, in my opinion.

The dad was WAY over the top about his cause and was choosing the cause over his family, which is ridiculous. Making a fool of his family just to prove a point. Screw that. You don’t need to drag your family in the dirt to prove a point, especially the point of a rodeo being unethical. And the freaking cowboy’s reasoning was BS. He just talked about what the rodeo meant to him, which I can understand, but not really defending it.

I really don’t want to go into the ethical discussion of this, but I knew I was over this movie when the main guy literally said that they only rope the calves (aka baby cows) when “they have to.” Yall don’t have to, that’s the thing. He tried defending it by saying that they treat them like the “princesses they are.” Yeah. Princesses that you needlessly scare and tie their legs together. Compared that to bringing them to the vets and the vet having to do it. There’s just so much to unpack with this.

Normally I can overlook these things for other rodeo romances, but this one was just no. It felt like a jab to animal rights activists and not even a good one. I couldn’t get behind the romance and the story was weak. And it was a giant pile of crap. Not even in a good way.

The Kissing Booth

This is a teenage romance between girl and her best friend’s brother.

I really enjoyed this movie. I can’t wait for the second one. My biggest issue with it was the best friend. He was very unsupportive of the relationship, which I could understand to a point, but I feel like he just went over the top with it. It was a really fun romance and is definitely for older high school age, if not a bit older. But it was fun and I’m excited for the second one coming out in July.

Set It Up

Set It Up is about two assistants trying to set up their bosses to get said bosses off their backs so they can have more free time.

This was an okay romance for me. It was fun and enjoyable, but there wasn’t anything really that made me LOVE it. It was just okay.

Dog Days

This one follows several different people in several different scenarios, all related to dogs but not all romances.

It was fun and cute. I loved the look at how dogs can affect people and the fun romances that were in the story. I say watch it if you want!

Forever My Girl

This movie is about a country singer who finds his way back home when he learns his best friend from high school was killed by a drunk driver. Back home and back to the woman he left at the alter and her daughter.

I really enjoyed this movie. I couldn’t really bring myself to like the main male, but as we learned more about him, I was able to understand him better. The romance was cute and the daughter was adorable. It’s not a masterpiece by any means, but it was very enjoyable.

Holly’s Holiday

This is a Christmas time romance about a woman who pretty much wishes up her perfect man. Except having that perfect man might not be everything it’s cracked up to be, especially when she starts having feelings for her coworker.

I enjoyed this one. It was weird watching a Christmas romance during the almost summer, but hey. It’s pretty chilly in my house right now, so it’s fine. I snuggled up with a blanket and enjoyed the time! It was a fun one, but again, nothing that really stood out to me. The ending seemed a bit jumbled.

Amazon Prime

After the Ball

This movie follows the daughter of a huge clothing designer as she disguises herself as a boy to convince her father that things are changing for the worse within his company.

I loved the slight references to the original Cinderella story in this. It was a fun romance and a fun story. Again, not absolutely flawless, but still good.

Betting on the Bride

This movie follows a woman who has been engaged three times, all three times she hasn’t gone through with it. Then there’s a guy who is the epitome of a bachelor who decides to take on a bet that the can be married within a month. It just so happens that he bets on this woman and she has given up on finding love and weddings, etc.

I thought this movie was really cute. It was a bit quick since the goal was that they would get married within a month. And it all just happened really quick. But it was fun and cute. Nothing that really stood out to me, though.

Road Less Traveled

This one follows a country songwriter that returns to her hometown to try to convince her grandmother to let her have her mother’s wedding dress for her upcoming wedding. While home, she runs into her ex-boyfriend and the one that broke her heart and inevitably kickstarting her career.

I think that, while this one was really the epitome of cheesy romance, it is one that stands out from others. I don’t want to get into the details because of spoilers, but it was a nice breath of fresh air. It was definitely cheesy and a bit over the top at times, but it was a fun one to watch and had me smiling and laughing most of the time.

That being said, like most movies seem to be for me, it was a bit lacking. I just wish there had been more time for the main character to grow and to see the romance. This would have made a good TV show, honestly. Expanding upon the relationship between the main character and her fiance and then flashing back and exploring the romance with the ex and then finally returning to show her growth and why she made the choices she made in the end. Just a one or two season show would have been fine. Max 3 seasons.

And that’s it! That’s my wrap up. I did enjoy a lot of these. Besides the one, there weren’t any that were just really horrible. Sorry this took so long to get up. I will say I watched probably 5 of them within the past two days. And I can’t say I’m upset about it.

I’m really looking forward to tackling the movies I listed in round 2, which you can see here. Honestly, I’m going to try to get some reading done today, but I’ll probably end up watching quite a few of the movies on that list.

Recommend some of your favorite movies or ones you’d like me to watch below!

I will be doing a rewatch round of these, so recommend everything, even if you think I would have seen it already.

Thanks so much for joining me and I’ll see you all very soon.
